5 Wardrobe Staples Every Busy Mom Needs

If you’re like me, you spend more time focused on your kids’ clothes than you do your own. I like to make sure my kids look put together, but often find myself running out the door in yoga pants and a t-shirt (that, if I’m lucky, doesn’t look like I slept in it). It’s time to take ourselves off the back burner, moms! We are busy! We put a lot of time into our roles as moms and wives, and it’s perfectly ok to invest a bit more time into ourselves and our closets. Because being a mom doesn’t have to mean we sacrifice style. I don’t know about you, but feeling good about what I’m wearing can set the tone for the whole day.

There are a few things every woman should have in her closet to make putting a quick, cute outfit together a breeze:

1. A good pair of jeans

I know, you’ve heard this one before. But it really is important. Invest in the best pair of jeans your budget will allow (even if it means stretching it just a wee bit). A nice dark wash, straight or slim fit, with a bit of stretch is universally flattering. Find a pair that you feel good in, and they’ll be in your closet for years to come. Jeans are so easy to dress up or down, which makes them perfect for outings with the kids, coffee with your mom squad, or that occasional date night. Even more comfy? Jeggings. Not to be confused with regular leggings that have a fake denim look.

Definitely not the same. Jeggings are actual denim and feel like jeans, they just have the elastic waist like leggings. There are so many cute ones out now! If you’re not into the button and zipper closure thing, but still want that jeans look, these need to be in your life.

2. Layering tees and tanks

Basic tees and tank tops are must-haves for any wardrobe. I like to buy a few of the go-with-everything solid colors (black, white, neutral), and then a few of my favorite colors to give some pop to basic outfits. In the summer, they can be worn alone with your favorite pair of jeans or shorts. In the cooler months, wear them under a cardigan, a cute bomber jacket from Urban Outfitters or your favorite denim jacket.

3. Leggings

You can’t make a wardrobe staple list for moms without including leggings. The comfort and versatility of them simply can’t be beat. You definitely need a few basic black pairs that go with EVERYTHING. They look great with cardigans, longer tanks or tunics, or under dresses. They are easily worn with any type of shoe, from flip-flops to winter boots. And, if you want to spice it up a little, you can try out a few printed styles which have become increasingly popular the last couple of years. The prints are fun, but basic black is my go-to. They flatter just about everyone and, again, so. Very. Comfortable.

4. Flats

You need a good pair of flats. They go with everything. Ballet flats and loafers are a great alternative to flip-flops or tennis shoes, and give you a more polished look, while still being comfortable. It’s important to invest in a good pair that’ll be kind to your feet all day. Running errands or off to a play date? Pull on your favorite jeans and cute top and step into a pair of Rothy’s loafers. You’ll be out living your best mom life and looking cute doing it!

5. Cardigans

Cardigans have been around for ages and never seem to go out of style. With so many options to choose from, (long, oversized, short, boyfriend style, classic) you’re sure to find one that suits your taste. They add that finishing touch whether you’re wearing a dress, leggings, or your favorite jeans. Throw one on over your basic layering pieces or a cute blouse for an added pop (and/or warmth) to your outfit.

So, save those yoga pants and workout clothes for the gym, and add a few of these wardrobe must-haves that’ll have you looking and feeling great when you get dressed every morning.
