Fighting breast cancer is the sole focus of Susan G. Komen and it’s a cause that is near and dear to my heart. This insidious disease takes so many lives and drastically changes the lives of loved ones who have to watch their family members succumb to this disease. While advancements in both research and awareness continue to move forward, we need to do more. That’s why I’m so happy to help Susan G. Komen on their mission of fighting breast cancer.

Fighting Breast Cancer for My Family

I have a question for you. Who’s your one? Who’s the person in your life who’s been impacted by breast cancer or the person you want to make sure never gets breast cancer? It’s a question Susan G. Komen is asking everyone. It’s an important one because it brings home just how personal the fight against breast cancer is. I actually have two “ones.”

When I was 9 years old, I lost my grandma, Bess, to breast cancer. I was so young, and I was not prepared to watch her fight against this terrible disease, slowly going downhill and ultimately dying from it. I still get emotional thinking about it to this day.

I remember visiting her in the hospital, attached to IVs and monitors and looking so frail. She refused so hard, refusing to give in to her cancer or the horrible treatments she had to endure. For her, it was a struggle against both cancer and the treatments she needed. It was incredibly hard to watch. Through it all, she never lost her spirit, and she never gave up. In fact, she held on long enough to meet my baby brother when he was born. Shortly after that, we lost her.

My other “one,”, is my daughter. I never knew it was possible to love someone as much as I love her. Every day I spend with her is a blessing, and I want her to have a long, happy, and healthy life. I know breast cancer can be hereditary, and that terrifies me. That’s why I was so eager to share my story with all of you and help Susan G. Komen with fighting breast cancer.
